One of the World’s greatest sporting cities will play host to a world-class triathlon as Madrid has today been announced as the newest member of the Challenge Family world series of triathlons.
The inaugural Challenge Madrid event will take place on September 24, 2017 with the event finish line located in the centre of Madrid, which is visited by thousands of tourists from across the world every day.
Challenge Madrid joins forty-nine existing Challenge Family races across the globe and will be an official qualifier for The Championship, which is Challenge Family’s championship event at the half-distance.
The 3.8km swim leg takes place 75 kilometres from the capital in one of the most enchanting and attractive touristic areas of the region of Madrid: Buitrago de Lozoya. The 180km bike leg includes incredible locations in the Madrilenian Sierra, and passes through the famous tour of the mountain passes with the ascents to Canencia, Morcuera and Cotos.
The 42.2km run is five laps and takes in almost all of the Madrid River area ("Madrid Río"). The run will finish with the ascent to the Cuesta de la Vega, before entering the Puerta del Sol in the heart of the city for the incredible finish line.
Zibi Szlufcik, CEO of Challenge Family, says: “We are thrilled to welcome Madrid in to the Challenge Family series of events. Challenge Madrid is our tenth full distance event and we couldn’t think of a better place to hold it,” said Szlufcik. “The Challenge Madrid team have done a remarkable job in bringing this event together and athletes will be the true recipients of their hard work as each experiences a brilliant race with a particularly incredible finish line in the heart of Madrid.”
For international visitors to Madrid there is a never ending array of cultural and entertainment options including the Plaza Mayor, Museo Nacional Del Prado, and the Royal Palace of Madrid, a regal 2,000-room palace, armory and garden. For sports fans a visit to Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, home ground of the famous Real Madrid football team, is a must.
