Today’s announcement of Challenge Family’s latest addition sees the global triathlon series break new ground in Thailand in one of the country’s most historic and spectacular regions.
At the Bangkok press conference, attended by both the Governor of the Sports Authority of Thailand and the Governor of Kanchanaburi Province, details of Challenge Kanchanaburi were announced.
Delivered together with professional triathlon management specialists, TAB Agency Co, Challenge Kanchanaburi is set amongst the lakes, rivers and hills of the iconic Srinagarind Dam region on the banks of the famous River Kwai. Athletes from across the globe will race over the half or Olympic distance on 23 October 2016.
From this collaboration, Thailand aims to raise the standard of triathlon competitions in the Kingdom, and inspire sustainable ‘Thailand Creative Tourism’ efforts. The races will help promote sports and local tourism, inject income into the local communities where races are held, and bolster popularity of triathlons in Thailand, as a whole, in line with the growing interest in the sport worldwide.
Challenge Family and the Sports Authority of Thailand are fully committed to the legacy of the sport. Mr. Sakol Wannapong, Governor of the Sports Authority of Thailand, said, “Challenge Family triathlons are world-class and we expect Challenge Kanchanaburi will inspire the development of the sport and offer the best experience for every athlete.”
“Challenge Family races cover all Asia-Pacific regions, where triathletes get to experience the local lifestyles and natural surrounds, with a variety of routes,” Marcus Altmann, Challenge Family CEO Asia-Pacific, explained, “The potential racing areas across Thailand offer a wide choice of accommodation, convenient transportation systems, utilities and diverse amenities. All Challenge races are chosen for their spectacular locations, unique courses and vibrant communities.”
Mr. Sak SomboonTho, Governor of Kanchanaburi Province, commented, “We’re delighted to be honoured as the chosen location for this triathlon. The ‘Srinagarind Dam’ is the largest clay-core, rock-filled dam in Thailand and a unique and wonderful symbol of Kanchanaburi. Athletes will face a challenging course, as they swim in the vast waters, cycle alongside mountains, run through thick natural forest, and experience the charm of local culture. We are ready to welcome all visitors to the very many popular attractions of our province.”
Just a few hours drive from Bangkok, Kanchanaburi is rich in history and culture, as well as stunning natural beauty. From the WWII ‘Bridge over the River Kwai’, the Tiger Cave Temple and the idyllic Erawan Falls, to the Thong-Pha-Phum National Park land, this region presents a compelling draw for athletes, sponsors and spectators from across the globe.
