After being postponed due to the effects of Hurricane Joaquin, the coastal town of Cambridge provided a charming and scenic backdrop for athletes from around the world today at the 2015Ironman Maryland triathlon presented by Transamerica.
Tim Smith (M30-34) from Brooklyn, N.Y. and Christina Lauer (F30-34) from Arlington, Virginia took the top honors with finishing times of 8:38:21 and 09:42:56, respectively.
One of more than 40 events in the global Ironman Series, the 2015 Ironman® Maryland triathlon presented by Transamerica saw more than 1,400 athletes start the race. Shortened due to rough water conditions, the 1.86-mile swim was held in waters more protected from the wind in protected waters of the Choptank River.
Athletes then took on a two-loop 112-mile bike course that wound through Dorchester County and into Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge. The two-and-a-half-loop 26.2-mile run in the scenic surroundings provided by the charming city of Cambridge was flat and fast and took athletes through downtown Cambridge with an energetic finish at the historic Long Wharf.
The event offered 50 coveted age-group qualifying slots to the 2016 Ironman World Championship, taking place on October 8 in Kailua-Kona, Hawai'i.
