A wire to wire performance from Titahi Bay's Tony Buckingham saw him take the honours today in the men's section of the winter series Scorching Duathlon at Scorching Bay.

Over the 8km run, 36km bike and 4km run Buckingham held the advantage at the end of each leg to claim victory and improve on his second place at last months event. Buckingham was pushed for all of the race by Mike Cousins of Normandale with the final run being decisive.

A strong bike leg from Cousins saw the gap between one and two closed to just seconds. However on the final 4km run leg Buckingham kicked away to take victory by 1 minute and 56 seconds.

In the women's section Lower Hutt's Rebecca Keat claimed the women's title with a 48 second win over Natalie Hardaker of Hataitai.

Like in the men's race the run legs were crucial for Keat who pulled away in each of the run legs to take the win.

The event at Scorching Bay today saw over 100 participants, aged from 10 to 70 plus, testing themselves over a variety of distances with long, medium, short and novice sections.

Race director Daryl Bloomfield says with the sun shining it was perfect conditions for all competitors from novices to the most experienced to challenge themselves and have some fun.

The next event in the Scorching Duathlon winter series will be held in Upper Hutt on Sunday 8 September.
