It was a beautiful evening for the competitors on Race 16 of the Takapuna State beach series held on Tuesday night. This was the final official race before the Starship Foundation charity race next Tuesday the 20th March.
A great turnout of competitors showed up to race in perfect conditions with slight easterly breezes.
NZ Canoeist Ben Fouhy snuck ahead of Steven Ferguson this week in the 5km Surf Ski Paddle event. Fouhy was pushed right till the end by Ferguson but managed to hold onto his lead, winning in 24m 52s.
Olympic hopeful Steven Kent entered the water quickly in the 1.5km Ocean swim. The NZ swimmer manoeuvred his way to the front of the pack early on and led the group home winning convincingly in 11m 48s. Brenda Russell won the women's race in 12 minutes.
Tara La Grange took out the women's 5km beach run making this her sixteenth win of the series, a perfect winning record for the young athlete. In the men's division, Finn Mason ran confidently taking out first place in 17m 4s.
NZ's top female Stand up Paddle boarder, Annabel Anderson blitzed her fellow competitors in the 5km event. The world class athlete thrived in the conditions and paddled her way to victory completing the race in 17m 24s.
Troy Huston won the men's event in 17m 03s despite finishing behind Gavin Haughton who was disqualified for racing on a long board. Jeremy Stephenson came in second while Bevan Gooch placed third.
Prizes will be awarded to the competitors in two weeks time at the official State Beach series prize giving.
