Following the successful 2011 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships held in Szeged, Hungary the International Canoe Federation (ICF) has now confirmed qualification for the Olympic Games London 2012.
We are pleased to announce that in addition to Lisa Carrington's Olympic qualification with her World Champion win in the Women's K1 200m, Lisa and Erin Taylor have also directly qualified the Women's K2 500m with their A Finals 9th result.
The qualification system is not yet complete as the Continental qualification events, including the Oceania Canoe Sprint Championship in Australia, are yet to take place. Oceania Championships are to be held on the 2-4 March 2012 in Penrith, NSW and are New Zealand's last chance at qualification.
Ben Fouhy narrowly missed out (by one place) on direct qualification in the Mens K1 1000m with his 9th placing in the A Final. Steve Ferguson and Darryl Fitzgerald's result was also not quite good enough for direct qualification after they placed 10th with a 1st place in the Men's K2 1000m B Final.
Australia has also failed to directly qualify in these events. NZ will line up against Australia and other Oceania nations at the Oceania Championships in the Men's K1 200m and 1000m and Men's K2 200m and 1000m races to fight it out for Olympic qualification.
